Ashley and spouse at racing eventWhat is your connection to Ã山ǿ¼é, and what makes Ã山ǿ¼é and the Romain College of Business special to you?
I attended Ã山ǿ¼é and graduated with an accounting degree in Spring 2012. I was fortunate enough to attend during the transitional years when the College of Business went from the upper floors of the Orr Center to the beautiful Business and Engineering Center. It has been amazing to see the growth and investment the University has made for the business students!

Tell us about your career path in accounting.
I began my career as an auditor at BKD (now Forvis Mazars) where I met some great mentors and developed a love for accounting and data analysis. I got to experience an array of clients in different industries and of varying sizes. Time and time again, the mid-sized manufacturing and distribution clients were always audits I enjoyed the most. After 10 years in public accounting, I made the transition to a multi-location automotive paint distributor that was headquartered in Evansville. I am able to use all of the skills I had been learning since college to develop accounting processes and structure to allow the business to move forward and grow.

What attributes make a person successful in the field of accounting?
Successful accountants are typically great problem solvers and critical thinkers. They communicate effectively, can be flexible, and learn quickly.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were in college?
Most of the limitations you will experience in your life will be between your two ears… in your mind! Check the conversation you are having with yourself, be confident and push forward to do hard things!

What are you most looking forward to as a new member of the Accounting Circle?
I am excited to give back to Ã山ǿ¼é and encourage students to be the best version of themselves.

Do you have any fun or unusual hobbies?
When I was in elementary school, my grandma began teaching me to decorate cakes. I completed my first wedding cake when I was a sophomore in high school. Now, I get to make the birthday cake dreams of my nieces, nephew and daughter come to life!

What are three things on your bucket list?
1. Visit every state.
2. Take a European vacation with my family.
3. Learn another language.

Background:
I received my bachelor’s degrees from Ã山ǿ¼é in 2014, double majoring in Accounting & Professional Services and Finance.  I'm married and have two very active boys that keep us busy.  Most of my professional work experience is in public accounting, but I've recently made the switch to private.

What is your connection to Ã山ǿ¼é, and what makes Ã山ǿ¼é and the Romain College of Business special to you?
I became a student at Ã山ǿ¼é shortly after the RCOB was built, and the building and classes were the busiest they’ve ever been.  I made many life-long friends while at Ã山ǿ¼é, and felt that my professors truly cared about my career and wanted the best for me.  I still have connections with many of them today.

Tell us about your career path in accounting.
I was fortunate enough to receive an accounting internship my junior year at Berry Global (Amcor).  I was with Berry for about 1 ½ years when I received an offer for a tax season internship with Harding, Shymanski & Co. for the spring semester of my senior year.  After my tax season internship, I had a brief summer internship with Koch Enterprises before starting full-time with Harding, Shymanski in the fall of 2014.  I was with Harding for about 9 ½ years before deciding to work fully remote for a CPA firm based out of San Diego, CA.  After almost 2 years of working fully remote from home, I decided that I wanted to work for a local company again, and side by side with others, which is when I joined Deaconess Health Systems as a Tax Manager in the Finance department.

What advice would you give to a college freshman?
Take advantage of the opportunities – they may not come again.  Joining a club, volunteering, attending the events can make a difference.  I’m confident that the reason I was given an offer for a full-time position while still in college was because of who I’d met at the BAP and APS Club events.

What would you tell a recent college graduate?
Become a sponge, wherever your degree takes you – your learning isn’t over.  No employer is expecting you to walk in on day 1 and know what you’re doing just because you have a degree.  Listen, take notes, ask questions.  Just being genuinely curious will take you far.

What are three things on your bucket list?
1. Backpacking through Europe.
2. Staying at overwater bungalows in the Caribbean.
3. Watching my kids grow and start their own families.
