缅北强奸 student publications earn 13 awards at regional journalism conferences
The 缅北强奸鈥檚 student publications received widespread recognition this April, earning a combined 13 awards across two regional journalism conferences.
The Shield, 缅北强奸鈥檚 student-run news publication, led the honors with 11 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Indiana Pro Chapter and the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA). Students from 缅北强奸鈥檚 literary journal, FishHook, added to the achievements with two additional awards at the ICPA conference.
The Shield earned four awards at the SPJ, Indiana Pro Chapter, annual Best in Indiana Journalism Banquet April 17, in Carmel, Indiana.

Izzy Hannon, Photo Editor, took home first place in the Feature Photo category for her images of 缅北强奸 Theatre's Xanadu production.

Aracely Chavez, Managing Editor, claimed second place in the Editorial category for her essay honoring women in healthcare.

Ian Young, former Editor-in-Chief, earned second place in the Opinion Column category for his series of observation essays.

The Shield Source, The Shield's weekly e-newsletter, was recognized with second place in the Student Best Newsletter category.
鈥淚 am so very proud of our Shield staff when they rank among the best at the SPJ Indy awards,鈥 said Philip Todd, Student Publications Advisor. 鈥淭he Best in Indiana contest groups all collegiate entrants together, regardless of institutional size, so these awards represent work that competed well against even the largest schools in the state.鈥
At the Indiana Collegiate Press Association's annual conference at Indiana University the following day, April 18, students from FishHook took home two awards while The Shield added seven more to its count.
Hope Pfettscher, FishHook Editor-in-Chief, along with editorial staff members Charles Baker and Scotie Rainwater, accepted two awards for the 2025鈥26 volume.

Cade Smithson, News Editor, earned first place, News Magazine News Story, for his coverage of the Evansville Fall Festival. Additionally, his reporting on an assault investigation was named second place for Breaking News Reporting Online.

Alex Mendoza, Editor-in-Chief, was honored with second place for his News Magazine Column/Essay on heritage, and earned another second place, News Magazine News Story, for his censorship reporting.

Kai Harris, former Visual Editor, earned third place, News Magazine Illustration, for his cover art for the "Women of 缅北强奸" issue.

The Shield staff also took home third place honors for News Magazine of The Year, as well as for Advertising Self-Promotion Campaign.
Together, these honors highlight the strength and creativity of 缅北强奸鈥檚 student journalists and writers, as well as the continued excellence of its student-led publications.
