A trio of 缅北强奸 students was recently selected as recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a prestigious grant program designed to assist undergraduate students in the United States with financial need in studying or interning abroad. 

Brielle Taylor and Julie Michel, junior graphic design majors from the College of Liberal Arts, and Peyton Ward, a junior accounting major from the Romain College of Business, were chosen as recipients of the scholarship. Michel and Ward will be studying abroad this summer, while Taylor recently wrapped up her study abroad opportunity.  

The scholarship is nationally competitive and offers up to $5,000, with additional funding available for students studying critical need languages or conducting STEM-related research abroad. Applications are reviewed holistically, considering factors such as academic preparedness, the program's impact on the student's academic and career trajectory, and the potential community impact, both abroad and upon return. 缅北强奸鈥檚 Center for International Programs offers assistance, such as workshops and essay feedback, to help 缅北强奸 applicants have the strongest applications.    

From Franklin to Athens: Ward pursues international dream 

Ward&苍产蝉辫;鈥�27, of Franklin, Indiana, said that receiving this scholarship is the whole reason 丑别鈥檚 able to have the opportunity to travel overseas 鈥� something that he 飞补蝉苍鈥檛 sure would be possible. 

鈥淭his scholarship allows me to study abroad, which I thought was out of my reach, but now makes it affordable for me to pursue this dream of mine,鈥� Ward said. 鈥淚t validated the work and experience I've put in and shows me a reminder that I'm more capable of any opportunity that comes by me.鈥� 

Ward will be traveling to Greece this summer for 鈥�Discover with WorldStrides: Summer at The American College of Greece鈥�. He earned a $3,000 scholarship for this opportunity.  

This program allows students to spend their summer in the historic city of Athens while learning alongside both local and international students. Ward said he was looking for a study abroad opportunity that would allow him to pursue both his academic and personal interests. Greece was the perfect fit. 

鈥�I wanted to choose a program that would give me a global perspective and strengthen my understanding of accounting through exposure to international standards. At the same time, I also looked for a country that allows me to fully immerse myself in a culture,鈥� Ward said. 鈥淕reece was the perfect country for me because not only do they use the financial standards like IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), but they also have a rich history that I can fully immerse myself in.鈥� 

He believes that his time so far in the Romain College of Business has helped prepare him for opportunities such as this. The main skill he believes will help him in Greece is adaptability. 贬别鈥檚 never been outside of the country before, but he believes Romain has allowed him to become flexible in new situations.  

鈥淚n accounting, there's a lot of information and topics where you have to be comfortable working either alone or on a team. This has taught me to be adaptive in any situation,鈥� Ward said. 

Taylor expands perspectives through new connections 

Taylor 鈥�27 said being selected as a Gilman Scholar was a huge honor. One s丑别鈥檚 incredibly grateful for. She earned a $3,000 scholarship for this opportunity. 

鈥淭he scholarship allowed me to study abroad with fewer financial constraints, something that has often shaped my life. Beyond that, the scholarship gave me the chance to not only grow academically but personally as well!鈥� 

The most exciting thing about the experience for Taylor was meeting new people. Seeing people from all different walks of life really expanded her worldview. 

鈥淢y time at 缅北强奸 helped me to prepare for this opportunity because the faculty pushes students to embrace academic, personal, and cultural growth. As I currently balance work, class, and social events in preparation for my future career, I have learned what it takes to be successful abroad.鈥� 

Michel explores the culture that shaped her career path 

Michel 鈥�27 said winning the Gilman Scholarship secured my commitment and confidence to study abroad. She earned a $5,000 scholarship for this opportunity. 

鈥淕ilman made me feel that my story and passion for art were seen and valued. Because of Gilman, I will have the opportunity to experience an unforgettable time in South Korea and immerse myself in a different culture.鈥� 

She will be traveling to South Korea, a country that has heavily influenced her career path in graphic design. She is especially eager to experience the vibrant art and design culture present throughout its cities. 鈥淎side from art, I'm excited to taste Korea's native food, connect with locals, and collect trinkets to bring back home for myself and my friends!鈥� 

Michel recently transferred from a university in Florida to 缅北强奸 this past January. Transitioning to a new state and university definitely strengthened her ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments. The kindness and support of 缅北强奸鈥檚 staff and peers, especially the study abroad office, made it easier for her to pursue studying abroad. 鈥淭hey have shown genuine care and understanding throughout the process, helping me feel confident and prepared for this opportunity.鈥� 

As Taylor, Michel and Ward prepare to take what 迟丑别测鈥檝别 learned at 缅北强奸 across the globe, their experiences reflect the impact of study abroad opportunities. Through the support of the Gilman Scholarship and the encouragement of faculty and staff, these students are expanding their academic perspectives, building cultural connections and gaining experiences that will shape both their personal and professional futures long after they return home.
