While the sign shows many of the common roles fungi play, they also contribute to the environment on a larger scale by digesting environmental pollutants, making food for animals and producing medicines like penicillin.
Anatomy
As fungi come in many different shapes and sizes, it's important to note that the well-known "mushrooms" we see are only the fruiting bodies of fungi, and there are many other parts that play a role in their functions. The figure below shows the anatomy of a typical mushroom.
The figure also shows how fungi are able to connect to the plants and send them nutrients by forming mycorrhizal associations. Mychorrhiza plays such a vital role in ecosystem health and growth, with more than 90% of plants depending on it. This is because it provides a support system around plants, boosting plant growth and helping them receive important nutrients in times of environmental stressors where plants aren't getting enough on their own.
Identification
Using the "mushroom vocabulary" in this figure and more specific knowledge on mushroom species, you can look for shelf or cap mushrooms. 
You can look for the difference between them having gills or pores. You can also examine the habitat they're in, whether they're on a decaying log or damp, rich soil, to understand their ecological role. With this information, you can more confidently identify the fungi around you. However, while there are many ways to identify fungi, it is crucial that you are educated when it comes to foraging mushrooms as food. Unfortunately, many edible mushroom species have look-alikes that are toxic for humans to ingest.
