The Firefly Festival returns to New Harmony, Indiana, on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27, 2026. This fun community event celebrates both the magic of fireflies and the naturalist, Thomas Say, who first described the Say's Firefly in New Harmony in 1826. As one of the many exciting activities planned for the Firefly Festival this year, Historic New Harmony is hosting a class for adults (age 18+) called Draw Like a Naturalist.
, a science and nature-based illustrator from Evansville, Indiana, will be teaching the Draw Like a Naturalist class at the Atheneum Visitor Center on Saturday, June 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Central Time. Participants will receive a sketchbook and small drawing kit to use during the class and take home afterwards. In this 2-hour class, they will learn to closely observe and draw from natural history specimens.
$15. The price includes the cost of materials (sketchbook and drawing kit). Payments are due on arrival on June 27 at the Atheneum's Museum Shop.
Space is limited to 8 students. To reserve a spot in this class, please call the Atheneum at 812-682-4474 and provide an email address and phone number.
