Service Animals in Campus Housing

Do I need to register my service animal?

Students with service animals are not required to register with Disability Resources or the University.

However, if you plan to have a service animal live with you on campus, you must:

  • Contact Housing and Residence Life (HRL) before bringing the animal to campus.

What is a Service Animal?

A service animal is defined by:

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
  • Indiana state regulations

A service animal is:

  • An animal individually trained to perform specific tasks
  • Tasks must be directly related to a person鈥檚 disability
    (physical, sensory, psychiatric/mental, or intellectual)

Important:

Animals that provide only the following are not considered service animals:

  • Emotional support
  • Comfort
  • Companionship
  • General wellbeing
  • Crime deterrence

University Guidelines

The University may:

  • Ask if the animal is required due to a disability
  • Ask what specific task(s) the animal is trained to perform

The University may require removal of the animal if:

  • It does not meet the legal definition of a service animal
  • It is not under control
  • It is not housebroken

Service animals that meet all requirements are allowed in:

  • Any campus space open to students and visitors
