Freshman Residence Halls

Moving to campus isn鈥檛 just about having a place to sleep鈥攊t鈥檚 about stepping into a community that helps you feel at home from day one. In the residence halls, your classes, friends, events, and support are all right outside your door. 

  1. Freshman-only halls: Newman, Governors, O鈥橞annon, and Ruston are all first-year only.
  2. Prime locations: Newman and Governors are near the Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center and across the boulevard from Rice Library.
  3. Theme Learning Communities: O鈥橞annon houses the first-year Theme Learning Communities鈥攂uilt-in connections with students who share your interests.
  4. Dining made simple: Residents choose a Red, White, or Blue Eagle meal plan鈥攕o you can fuel up and focus on classes, friends, and campus life.
  5. Built-in support: Resident Assistants (RAs) help you navigate college life and connect you to resources.
  6. More ways to get involved: Programs, leadership opportunities, and experiences that make campus feel smaller and more connected.
  7. Comfort and connection: Study spaces, lounges, and shared areas designed for both focus and fun.
  8. New for 2026-2027: Free laundry in campus housing.
  9. Coming for Fall 2026: Community kitchens in Newman and Ruston.
    • Residents in Governors will have access to Newman.
    • O'Bannon residents will have access to Ruston.

MicroFridge庐 Rental for 2026-2027

Students can rent a MicroFridge庐 for their room. MicroFridge庐 rentals will be delivered to rooms prior to August move-in if rented by July 27, 2026.

Two Bedroom Suite

  • Shared bathroom in each bedroom
  • Two desks and chairs 
  • Two twin beds (Size varies by room. Most beds are standard twin, with some Twin XL beds. If you plan to use a mattress topper on a standard twin bed, Twin XL sheets should fit comfortably.)
  • Two closets - one for each resident. In Newman and Governors, there is additional shelving that is along one side of each closet.聽
  • There are two windows in each bedroom in the two bedroom suites. Corner suites will have one bedroom with four windows and one bedroom with two windows.聽

One Bedroom Suite

  • Private bathroom
  • Desk and chair
  • Twin bed (Size varies by room. Most beds are standard twin, with some Twin XL beds. If you plan to use a mattress topper on a standard twin bed, Twin XL sheets should fit comfortably.)
  • Dresser
  • Closet
  • There is a floor to ceiling glass panel with a window in the middle in single rooms in Newman and Governors. There are blinds that cover the entire glass panel and window. There is one window in single rooms in Ruston and O'Bannon with blinds. 

Technology

  • Rooms are equipped with Ethernet connections and wireless Internet access (resident must provide Ethernet cord). There is no specific cord length as it depends on how residents choose to arrange the furniture in the rooms.
  • Students are welcome to use their preferred streaming services and devices to watch favorite shows, movies, etc.

Additional Amenities

  • Large first floor lounge
  • Lounge space on second and third floors in Newman and Governors
  • Lounge space on lower level, second and third floors in O'Bannon and Ruston
  • Vending machines and a pay printer in lobby
  • Laundry room on second floor
  • Ice machine on second floor
  • Mail and package services are available at the Package Hub located in the O'Daniel South apartment community

Helpful Tips

  • Beds raised to their highest have a space of 30" high underneath for storage. Lofts and bed risers are prohibited.
  • Beds can be bunked. Metal pins are in each bedroom to do so. Residents are responsible for bunking beds.
  • Residents provide their own dishes, cooking utensils, microwave, etc.
  • Residents may hang curtains at windows but should only use tension curtain rods. It is recommended that residents wait until they move in to measure windows for curtains since dimensions may vary among buildings. Blinds must not be removed from windows.
  • Halogen lamps/light bulbs not permitted.
  • Residents are responsible for cleaning their suite and must provide their own cleaning supplies and trash cans.
  • Residents provide their own shower liner and curtain. Shower hooks are provided. Residents must provide toilet paper, towels, toiletries, etc.
  • Closet doors slide open.
  • Free laundry beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year.

Note that the kitchenette, common room and bathrooms are the same as a two bedroom four person suite. The difference is there are four windows in one bedroom.
